Can dance floors be installed on grass – outside dance floors

A very simple answer is yes dance floors can be installed on grass – however ….. there are a few things to bear in mind.
There are dedicated outdoor dance floors specifically made for the purpose of being outside and can also handle being without cover (to an extent). You can potentially use any dance floor on grass but the supplier of the dance floor will either insist that a protective sheet is used beneath the dance floor or bring something suitable themselves.

Dance floors that are designed to go outside and made from more weather resilient materials, the wont use wood that can swell if the dance floor gets wet and also the adhesives within the dance floor would be more specific to outside conditions. They tend to be a little more flexible to allow for a slightly more uneven terrain of being outside.
These types of dance floor are comprised of aluminium batten bases with and aluminium frame. There is then a PVC base layer to the panel and is topped with a decorative vinyl layer to add the final style to the dance floor. We use Grumpy Joes flooring and they offer a range of designs for outdoor use. Called Inside Outside (ISOS)

Some suppliers (us included) will sometimes be able to use our standard stock of dance floors to be laid on grass too. However the dance floors would need to be undercover to prevent it from being exposed to the elements. This is for both rain / water damage to the dance floor but also so that it would not be laid in direct sunlight. When laid in direct sunlight the panels can experience thermal expansion especially with acrylic panels (black acrylic dance floors is the worst for thermal expansion). When there is cover available we would provide a protective matting to be placed under the dance floor to prevent moisture from rising from the ground. We have provided parquet dance floors installed on grass along with our starlit dance floors too.
