Types of Dance Floors

There are many different terminologies used for dance floors that light up. Some of the terminologies can also mean different types of light up dance floor. For example, a light up dance floor could be a dance floor with small LEDs that twinkle either white or colour changing. The same terminology can also be used to describe a dance floor that completely lights up. These kind of dance floors were popular in clubs in the 70s and 80s.

Below I will give some terminologies you can use or search for in order for you to find the right product for your needs. There could be several different search terms for the same product but I will list as many as I know and also the slightly different spellings of them too.

Dance Floor

Dance floor is the generic term used to describe any dancing area. This can be fixed within a venue or a dance floor can be installed to suit the event.

Portable Dance Floor

A portable dance floor is one that can be installed and then removed at a venue. A lot of hotels have a portable dance floor that they will install for a party or event. Portable dance floor is a generic term for all of the types of dance floors that we provide as we can set them up wherever we need to. For reference, all other descriptions of dance floors below will be referring to portable dance floors but some could be used to describe permanent installation as well. If you ever need to check with a venue then be specific when asking if they have a permanent installed dance floor or a portable dance floor.

Wooden Dance Floor

I would argue that a wooden dance floor is the most common dance floor used. The majority of venues that have a dedicated dance floor, either installed or portable, will be of a wooden variety. When using the term wooden dance floor, it does not actually mean that it is made of wood but that it has a wood effect. A lot of wooden dance floors are made from wood but there is a trend for outdoor dance floors now which are a type of wood effect vinyl.

Chequered Dance Floor

Chequered dance floor normally refers to a black and white dance floor with an appearance similar to a chessboard.

**A chequered dance floor can also be known as a Black and White Dance Floor or a Checkered Dance Floor.

Light Up Dance Floor

Light up dance floor can refer to any dance floor that has lights built into it.

LED Dance Floor

LED dance floor refers to a dance floor that has small LEDs installed that create a lighting effect from within the dance floor itself. These LEDs can be white or colour changing.

Starlit Dance Floor

Starlit dance floors are another name for LED dance floors. I would personally use the term starlit for dance floors with just white LEDs because it gives the effect of twinkling stars.

**Starlight Dance Floor is another version of a Starlit Dance Floor.

Twinkle Dance Floor

Twinkle dance floor is another variation of an LED dance floor. LEDs will turn on and off using either white or colour changing LEDs.

Retro Dance Floor

Retro dance floors are full light up dance floors that will give the effect of a 1970s / 1980s disco or night club. The entire floor will light up with colour changing patterns built within it.

**Night Fever Dance Floor and Disco Dance Floor are alternatives for a Retro Dance Floor. You could even have Retro Night Fever Dance Floors.

Colour Changing Dance Floor

A colour changing dance floor is a general term for any floor that has lights that change colour. This could be a twinkle dance floor or a retro dance floor or even animation and video dance floors.

Animation Dance Floor

Slightly more specific with this terminiology. An animation dance floor is a floor which has LEDs arranged in lines and can create simple visual effects. These could be shapes or basic lettering or maybe even a count down. The best example of this is a brand called the colour commander which used to be made by Grumpy Joe’s flooring.

Video Dance Floor

The video dance floor has a lot more LEDs installed than an animation dance floor; you can play any video through it. Basically, any video output that you could send to a TV screen or projector, you can have displayed on a video dance floor.

Seamless Dance Floor

A seamless dance floor refers to a dance floor which looks like it is one piece. Normally with portable dance floors there will be lines between the portable panels which when looked for can be visible. With a seamless dance floor, a basic portable dance floor is laid first and then wrapped in vinyl. The vinyl can be one colour or a custom design to your choosing. Seamless dance floors can not be reused.

Coloured Dance Floor

A coloured dance floor refers to any dance floor that is not the standard black, white or wooden.

Patterned Dance Floor

A patterned dance floor is a term that we use to describe our stock patterned or printed dance floors. It is when we encase a printed vinyl below the acrylic so that the design is protected and we can use these dance floors time and time again.

Mirrored Dance Floor

A mirrored dance floor can come in a range of colours but because of the mirror like finish on the dance floor it has its own specific terminology.
